Vintage Fashion Review, On an Island With You

Movie Title: On An Island With You
Actors: Esther Williams, Peter Lawford, Ricardo Montalban
Year: 1948

A Navy Pilot who is in love with Roselyn (Esther Williams) kidnaps her and flies her to a private island. Esther Williams plays an aquatic movie star.

First beautiful fashion spotted is a long canary yellow gown. Possibly a jewel neckline cape, Fringe falling from the shoulders and around the neck, dress has a sweetheart bodice and spagetti straps, ruching around the hips and long fringe falls from the midsection, very glamorous.

Second fashion mention, Esther Wiliam’s lace gown. Beautiful white lace, two piece gown. Top has a large scalloped keyhole opening, high collar and lace trim cap sleeves, bow at the bottom of the keyhole opening, and a tie at the base of the neck. Dress has a sprinkling of shimmery sequins throughout. Skirt is floor length.

Third fashion mention, Esthers co-star is wearing a beautiful dark green gown, tea length, spagetti straps, black full tulle skirt with a yellow tulle underskirt, top of the bodice is fitted and is yellow/green with a black or very dark green lace overlay, bodice lace comes down to a point near the midsection, neckline has black scalloped lace trim. (this dress could be a very dark green, its hard to tell for sure)

I have to say something about this beautiful gold lame’ bathing suit Esther Williams wears in one of her aquatic scenes. Its beautiful and really flatters her and shows off her curves. Halter strap, sweetheart neckline.

5th Fashion mention, a blonde singer is wearing a floor length gown, strapless with cut out in the center of the bodice, sweetheart neckline. Really shows off her hourglass figure. Mermaid style that flares at the bottom.
In the last scene Esther is wearing a two piece gown with very similar cut to the lace gown she wore at the beginning of the movie. Esthers co-star is wearing a beautiful coral gown, I can’t make out a lot of details but it does have some floral accents on the bodice that wrap around one side. It looks like maybe the fabric is chiffon. I wish I could see more of this one.

Overall a very cute movie, lots of singing, dancing, aquatic scenes, love the hairstyles, makeup with red lipstick and the gorgeous dresses. Many of Esthers bathing suits are really pretty as well as some of her more casual clothing. I like to write more about the fashions that really strike me or the clothing I can see the most of. This movie has great color. I read somewhere on-line this week that Esther was the first movie star to be apart of the aquatic movie style. Enjoy! If you do watch this movie, let me know what you think. If you see a classic film with beautiful vintage fashion that you think I should watch please let me know.  Have a great day.
